Making good money from writing, It’s not possible… is it? Unless you are one of the lucky few… Or, If you believe the hype about copywriting, maybe it is!

Copywriting. What’s it all about? And is it really as fantastic as those websites say it is? Well, I had no idea up until recently myself! (And am still figuring it out..)

Yes, like most apisiring writers, I’ve signed up for all the different writing-related e-newsletters out there, from the mainstream Australian Writer’s Centre to the amazing teachings of Holly Lisle. And most, if not all of them, have spoken at one point or another, about the mysterious world of copywriting.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t believe the hype the first time I heard about it. I mean, it sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Get paid huge sums to write?!! They make it sound so easy, almost as though the course advertisements were written by amazing… dum da da dum copywriters! Haha.

I’ve always seen it heralded as some amazing, lucrative way to earn money through creative writing. That is, of course, while you simultaneously pursue your own true passions in whatever creative writing field you choose (like writing that long-winded fantasy novel) that keeps you poorer than the days before Christmas!

Copywriting, Moneybags? Quick cash? Or scam?
Money, money, money! …Money?

After weighing up the pros and cons and feeling pretty unsure about my career right now (plus being the naturally curious and eager-to-expand-my-repertoire kind of person I am) I decided to sign-up for the latest round of online classes for Copywriting Essentials with the Australian Writer’s Centre Continue reading Making good money from writing, It’s not possible… is it? How to start blogging again after a long, long, long break: Just write something!

Hello loyal reader/s!

I bet you’re wondering, where have I been for 6+ months?! Well, if you’re one of my ONLY subscribers (you know who you are! Mum.) You also know that it’s been a crazy few months of moving, job-seeking, relationship drama’s and various other excuses I have for not updating. And obviously my last entry was all about getting back into it, so I can see why you are confused! If you’re still reading that is!

But it doesn’t mean I haven’t been doing some writing, even if it was only a little bit. The urge to write never, ever truly leaves me and I doubt it ever will.

So, I’m back, baby! Yay! Let’s see how long it lasts this time! < Optimism 🙂

Did you miss my silly entries? If so, like, comment, subscribe!!!

I’m back to writing, finally! Or Why I need to stop letting douche-bags distract me from my true passions!

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on my Blog. Which I know really disappoints my loyal followers. Hi mum!

And the reason, as you’ve probably gleaned from the very ambiguous title was an ill fated almost relationship. Anyone who knows me and knows me on Facebook knows that I don’t like to air my dirty laundry in public. It’s mostly just cute cats! But since this is related to writing and I won’t be mentioning any names (mine OR his) be forewarned that I’m about to let rip!

So this guy, you know the type. He pays for things, compliments you, fakes a future with you. Tells you your special, he’s never had such a connection with anyone! Blah blah blah blah blah! Then all of a sudden he’s cancelling dates with you, using shitty excuses and “his ex is screwing with his head.” He wants you to feel compassion for him. “She’s some nasty piece of work” he claims. She doesn’t get me like you do! How about you don’t be in contact with her anymore then you stupid knob-head?!!!

Don’t worry though I’m not a complete idiot. As soon as the alarm bells began to ring in my head, mostly screaming at me, “HE”S NOT OVER HIS EX!” I took action. I told him in no uncertain terms that I am not going to be anyone’s rebound girl or second option. I told him to sort his issues out with his ex and to NOT contact me until he had. That week was tough! I agonized over my decision, I wondered if I had done the right thing. I was SEVERELY tempted to contact him, I just had to know what was going on. For closure or something, I don’t know… Continue reading I’m back to writing, finally! Or Why I need to stop letting douche-bags distract me from my true passions!

A question that has plagued mankind for 10’s of years

So, as some of you may or may not know, I am currently studying Phlebotomy.

If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry, nobody does. Just Google it, I’ll wait here, patiently, don’t worry…

Alright, so now you know, I am going to ask a question that is full of deep, profound mysticism.

Ready? Okay, here we go:

Does wanting/practicing to be a creative writer help with studying other things? Like say, in exams or worksheets, assignments, power-points, presentations etc…

In order to answer this question I had to probe the deepest recesses of my mind, reaching places so unfathomable I came back a truly changed individual. The conversation went a little something like this:

Me: Brain, do you think creative writing helps you whilst doing this course?

Brain: ….Ummmh, yeah,maybe…I don’t know, not really….

Me: Wow! The d-deep unfathomable wisdom that is spewing forth from you, I j-just can’t handle it!

So there you have it! You can sleep soundly tonight, the answers are here.

Disclaimer: Yes I’m in an incredibly silly mood right now!

Finding awesome things in unexpected places, Otherwise known as, when did libraries get popular again?!

The other day, I decided to venture out into the world and try to join a writer’s group. I love, love, love hanging out with fellow writers and having a great talk and laughing about our stories and the crazy ideas that can pop into our heads.

So, with that in mind, I headed down to Helensvale library with hope, apprehension and curiosity. I arrived about 10 minutes before it was to start at, as the writer’s group website had told me, 11am. I asked the librarian at the information desk which room it was in. She seemed confused, she asked another librarian, who also seemed confused. I was suddenly worried I may not have the right time, or day, or even the correct library. When the second librarian came back after having asked a third, she informed me that she was “fairly certain that that wasn’t on until 1pm. Go have some lunch.”

I was perplexed, “I’m sure the website said 11am, but alright, I’ll come back!” I said cheerfully, hoping this information was accurate. I am not the most assertive person.

I went away, did a little shopping at Westfield and came back just before one. The library was full of people by the way – and this was a weekday. Anybody who claimed libraries were on the brink of extinction a few years ago, due to everything becoming digital, was wrong. There were young’uns reading newspapers, elderly people learning how to use computers and even, dare I say it, some cute guys!

I made my way to the meeting room, vowing to come to this particular branch a little more often and saw a few people in a big, stylish classroom. The teacher or leader – I could tell she was, she just had that ‘air’ about her – came up to me and asked me if I was there for the editing class.

“No, I’m actually looking for the ‘Helensvale Writer’s Group’,” I said, with a sinking feeling.

“Oh, well I don’t know anything about that, this is editing.” she said. After a pause she added, “You’re welcome to join.”

I had a moment of contemplation. Perhaps this fabled ‘Writer’s Group’ was all in my head, a web page manifested from the deep recesses of my mind to fulfill a personal need, a bit like the girls from “Suckerpunch”

“Alright. I’ll stay, thank you.” I hoped the embarrassment in my voice wasn’t too evident. It didn’t matter too much, I told myself, it’s still something to do with writing.

As it turned out, I was right to stay. The course was well presented, with class participation, cute examples of some very bad writing that needed major editing and even advice on how to pick the correct editor for your individual needs and manuscript. And the best part of all, it was FREE!

A funny thing happened when I was in the middle of class too. The manuscript I had given up on months ago as being “terrible” and “not worth writing any more of” (my words, by the way) suddenly popped into my head and began to write itself again. I quickly jotted down all of the notes I could get out, hoping the person next to me wouldn’t notice how feverishly I was acting.

So there you have it, libraries are awesome and as I found out, after picking up a brochure on my way out, full of free writing classes that are designed to inspire and encourage fledgling creative types like me. They also have a plethora of other creative and social events such as computing classes, history buff events and health and well-being seminars. And again, all of it is free.

For more information on some of these great courses that are happening, here on the Gold Coast right now, visit:

http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/library/events-activities-66.html

Or, if you don’t live in this region, consider heading to your local library, just to see whats going on. Who knows what could happen, you may even in end up in the wrong place at the right time. Or the right place, wrong time, which isn’t always a bad thing.

Good luck in all that you do, thanks for visiting!

An Open Letter to JK Rowling

Wow, powerful words to the most famous writer in the world!

What do you guys think about Scotland and their vote on independence?

This is J.K. Rowling’s original statement on the issue, thanks to the Telegraph:

And here is the rebuttal:

Teachers for Yes

JKRowling

by Allan Crosbie, PT English, Edinburgh

Dear Joanne,

You won’t remember me but nearly 20 years ago we worked together briefly in a school in Edinburgh. Your talents have since made you a lot of money and given you considerable status and influence; I have continued to channel mine into that Freirean project of opening minds and changing the world from the classroom. You now have millions of Twitter followers; I have six.

People should always act on their conscience and yours has obviously prompted you to speak out in order to try to prevent Scotland voting for Independence. In doing so over the last few days you have claimed to be speaking not out of self-interest but on behalf of ordinary Scots who, you claim, are set to suffer immeasurably under Independence.

You speak of three kinds of Yes voters – the first are gamblers on oil and blackmailers…

Self-mutilation and a pretty disturbing movie…

Here is a link to my first ever attempt at writing a synopsis for a movie and submitting it online.

Self-mutilation, I think we can all agree, is a pretty taboo subject. The movie “In My Skin” explores this theme to a very deep extent. It’s a movie that is incredibly disturbing, with some truly horrific scenes, yet the honesty and almost haunting beauty it instills, intrigues me greatly, so secretly (until now,) it has remained one of my favorite films.

Check out my synopsis on http://www.imdb.com with MAJOR SPOILERS and/or watch the movie, if you dare…
